Erdem Pancarcı

Erdem Pancarcı, born in Hanau, is a multi-instrumentalist,

composer, producer, and musical director. For more than

fifteen years, he has moved between diverse musical worlds

and cultural landscapes, working at the intersection of tradition,

improvisation, and contemporary sonic language.

His artistic work is shaped by a deep interest in musical storytelling

traditions and by the question of how cultural heritage

can be transferred into new contexts without losing its original depth

and significance.

After beginning his studies in Jazz in Frankfurt at the FMW, originally focusing on drums, his artistic direction increasingly shifted toward world music and traditional musical forms from Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Alongside drums and percussion, the Bağlama and Tembûr have become his principal instruments. Over the years, Pancarcı has developed a distinctive musical language that combines traditional forms of expression with improvisational approaches, jazz, and contemporary influences.

His repertoire includes traditional Kurdish, Turkish, Armenian, Persian, and Afghan folk songs, as well as musical traditions that have been passed down orally across generations. For Pancarcı, music is not merely an aesthetic form of expression, but also a carrier of memory, history, and cultural identity. His work seeks to create spaces where different cultural perspectives can enter into dialogue and where new musical encounters can emerge.

Alongside his work as an instrumentalist, his role as a composer, producer, and musical director has become a central focus of his artistic practice. Over the years, he has collaborated with hundreds of artists from a wide range of musical and cultural backgrounds, guiding projects from their initial conception through to their final realization.

His work encompasses composition, arrangement, production, artistic direction, studio work, and the musical leadership of large-scale projects. Rather than focusing on stylistic categorization, his artistic process is driven by the search for an authentic musical voice. Collaborating with musicians from diverse traditions has led him to develop an open artistic approach in which local musical cultures and global influences meet and interact.

His compositions move between traditional melodic languages, improvisational elements, and contemporary sonic textures. Drawing upon historical and cultural references, they reinterpret these influences within modern musical contexts. For Pancarcı, tradition and modernity are not opposing forces, but part of an ongoing dialogue between memory and renewal.

Beyond the stage and recording studio, his work has also been featured in various media formats. Through interviews and cultural discussions, Pancarcı has spoken about musical traditions, cultural heritage, and the unifying power of music, including appearances with BR-Klassik.

With his current project Mythos of Âşık, Erdem Pancarcı dedicates himself to one of the oldest and most vibrant narrative traditions of Anatolia and Mesopotamia: the Âşık tradition. This deeply rooted musical and poetic heritage—carried by wandering musicians, storytellers, and spiritual seekers—is understood not as historical folklore, but as a living form of cultural memory.

In Mythos of Âşık, Pancarcı combines traditional instruments such as the Bağlama and Tembûr with a contemporary sonic landscape that subtly integrates jazz, improvisation, and global musical influences. The works explore themes of love, longing, justice, and spiritual devotion—subjects that have shaped Âşık culture for centuries and remain profoundly relevant today.

Mythos of Âşık is conceived as a sonic mosaic: rooted in tradition without being retrospective; deeply grounded yet open to new perspectives. Through his work, Erdem Pancarcı invites audiences to experience music not merely as an art form, but as a place of encounter—between cultures, histories, and people.
