Mythos of Âşık

With Mythos of Âşık, multi-instrumentalist & composer Erdem Pancarcı dedicates himself to one of the oldest and at the same time most vibrant cultural narrative traditions of Anatolia and Mesopotamia: the Âşık tradition. This deeply rooted musical-poetic heritage—carried by traveling musicians, storytellers, and spiritual seekers—is more than just a musical genre. It is a form of lived memory culture, a bridge between folk poetry, mysticism, and social reality.

In his new release, Pancarcı combines traditional instruments such as the Bağlama and Tembûr with a contemporary soundscape that subtly integrates jazz, improvisational elements, and global music styles. The songs tell of love, longing, justice, and spiritual devotion—themes that have shaped the Âşık culture for centuries and appear more relevant today than ever.

Mythos of Âşık is not merely a reproduction of folkloric forms, but an artistic engagement with a myth that has not lost its significance through the passage of time. The album presents itself as a sonic mosaic—rooted in tradition, yet not nostalgic; deeply grounded, yet open to new contexts.

With this release, Pancarcı invites listeners to rediscover the Âşık not only as a musician, but as a cultural bearer, chronicler, and spiritual companion on a journey—at a time that more than ever seeks connection, depth, and authenticity.
